For more than 25 centuries Bazas was the ancient capital of the Vasates people.
Now, on the ancient Toulouse-Bordeaux Roman road, there is a magnificent cathedral, built apparently to house a relic of a cloth soaked in the blood of John the Baptist.
Many other monuments can be seen such as the XVth century Astronomer's house with it star decorated facade, or the XVIIIth century court-house now a pharmacy.
Bazas is also known for its regional beef market, its own race of beef cattle, the Bazadais, and the oxen festival in March
